Bandwagon DMG Look

Earlier, I had this chance to stretch my hand muscles and do something out of my scope. I did an Apple Disk Image file for Bandwagon (both S3 and FTP) so that it would look clean, nice, and cute, like our mascot, Derby (the character you can see in Bandwagon’s Logo). I still have a few GIMP / Photoshop tricks up my sleeve, and I showed the final result to Terence.

Just to give you a brief intro, most Mac applications are distributed as an Apple Disk Image (with file extension .dmg), much like your zip or RPM files in Windows and Linux, respectively. The cool thing about DMG’s is that you could make fancy presentations to make program installations more appealing to customers. Mac apps are being installed by merely dragging the .app file (much like the .exe file in Windows) to either the global or user-space Applications folder, whichever directory users have access inside. After that, all they have to do to install or run the application is to double-click the cute / candy-like icons. Very few Mac apps available in the market use the “Install Wizard” type of installations, which require users to have Admin access.

The one I did was a way for users to easily drag Bandwagon to the /Applications folder, in case they have Admin privileges. We developers create fancy backgrounds for folder views to instruct our customers how to install our apps.

Anyway, Terence told me it’s so like me, and just showed how I like cluttered things, maximizing the space to its last pixel (shown by the gradient). I felt sad and disappointed, but yeah, he somehow makes sense. I changed the dmg look to this:

I still like the old look. What do you guys think?
