Back to school: Free software for little kids
Vacation is over and it’s time to send (or drag) those little tykes (or monsters, depending on how you see them, of course) to school. I don’t actually know if I should be happy or sad today, the first day of school, because I don’t have my little brothers and sisters around to spend the day with, wrestling on my bed or arguing they should stop staying in my room and playing video games. Either way it feels rewarding to bond with them over things we enjoy sharing: technology and joking around.
Two days ago, I thought of something to distract them from playing Diablo 2 or Ninja Saga and I made them their own Facebook accounts (with their accompanying email accounts from my own domain). Aside from toning down the noise coming from those games, I also wanted them to be social and interactive in front of the computer. Yesterday, I did something more awesome: I installed free and open source software for them to play with during their school days.
Z2K – Zunesday Bug!
Recently, it was reported that the great Zune got a major meltdown this Thursday due to the so-called Z2k bug. Microsoft already apologized for the “inconveniece” (which I read as “incompetence”) and promised to resolve this as soon as possible.
They already found out the reason, and here is what they said: (From related Inquirer.net article)
“There is a bug in the internal clock driver causing the 30GB device to improperly handle the last day of a leap year,” Microsoft said.
“The issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009,” it said. “We expect the internal clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow.
“By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power before the unit can restart successfully then simply ensure that your device is recharged, then turn it back on,” it advised users.
Okay… so leap year… I think that’s pretty basic stuff right? So when’s going to be the next meltdown? 2010? Because they can’t differentiate 2009 from 2010? Or maybe the year has a zero at the end?
Shake that Groove Thang! 2nd Edition.
Another pride of the Pinoys, just recently, a group of young UP Fine Arts students won an Asia-wide viral video contest sponsored by Sony Ericsson.
Here is the winning video. Manny-Pacquiao-screaming-like-a-girl, and people-making-crazy-ways-just-to-hide-from-the-”blast” scenes included! Totally viral!
I don’t only feel so honored that we Filipinos are represented by a bunch of UP kids who not only stood out among all contenders, but also am proud that the Philippine entry is the only professional-looking vid (very good cinematography, editting, camera angles, lighting, not to mention better actors! Even the kid was kicking ass there!) among all that’s posted under the YouTube video’s owner channel. The Thailand entry would’ve been a good contender, but only the Philippine entry, without bias, has the every-second-has-a-moment formula in it, making it uber-viral.
You can see other “viral” videos from Sony Ericsson’s “Shaking Things Up” YouTube Channel.
Greenpinoy.com, et. al., Jokefest Tomorrow!
I really hope I could make it tomorrow for the jokefest. My only problem is I have to go somewhere else on Sunday morning. Maybe I’d drink a few beers? Just two bottles.
Here is the info about the jokefest: Ito na to!!!
And here is a map provided through Clare’s Blog:

Camera Cafè in the Philippines
Ever since I saw Camera Cafe in QTV, I was hooked, and left wanting for more. I like the fast-paced, slapstick-y formula, but more than that, CC’s best asset is the cast. Just look at this:
I LUV JOY VIADO’S ACTING! And yeah, all of the entire cast danced, and with that final signature make-face! Really hilarious!
And even though most of my Filipino brothers think that this is an imitation of the original French production (technically, it’s a franchise), I’d be so proud to say it’s not the format that brought the entire show to its peak, but the talented actors in it.

How About a Multi-million Retirement Video?
This video is the first thing that Bill Gates made to get me to laughing. Like really. Haha (… I really have to spell it out, no?).
The only people missing here are the Dalai Lama, Pope Benedict XVI, Madonna, and Sanjaya Malakar. Seriously, are they trying to be like Google, making fun of the serious work they do inside the company?
At least they made Bill’s dream come true… To be that most expensive starlet.

Yelling and Belting… They’re Just the Same
Of course, how can I be a YouTube addict without passing the hottest video of the day? Perhaps, not only it’s hot in YouTube, but it’s all over Philippine news!
The first impression that other people had (I guess non-Filipinos) is that it so looked like lip-synching. For us Filipinos, Charice Pempengco is just the new kid in town, and we have a packed lineup of singers who have same caliber as Charice Pempengco has. What got us interested is how she brought the entire globe to her attention, singing a strictly difficult song, “And I’m Telling You, I’m Not Going” recently revived by Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson.
And by “strictly difficult”, I daresay Charice did a good job. Not excellent, just good.
First off is the problem of belting. Of course there will always be belting when it comes to singing that song. Consider Bianca Ryan’s rendition.
As for America’s taste, Bianca is better than Charice because: (1) her voice won’t ruin that $100 speaker system; (2) her voice would save you thousands of dollars for auditory operations (e.g. fixing the eardrums), sometimes denied by health insurance companies; (3) on a serious note, she sounds country-ish, and, somehow, heartfelt. These are the problems that Charice might be encountering.
But wait! I’m not saying these because I want to grab attention or something. How did she fail here in the Philippines when she, in turn, raked millions of views in YouTube? Simple. She’s not star material here in the Philippines… yet. When Charice won, she was too young to be considered as a belting-star. Here in the Philippines, if you are a young singing star, you should sing with cute voices. Another reason is during the time she won, her singing wasn’t that heartfelt. We also have a singer, Sarah Geronimo, who sings like her, and she’s just two or three years older than Charice. She won a title back when she was fourteen, I guess, because of her heartfelt rendition of a Celine Dion classic.
In my opinion, she still doesn’t have that heartfelt performance. I mean, the Jennifer Hudson song was far from being too proud. It was a song of a desperate woman. She doesn’t act or sing desperate.
Bianca, in my opinion, is currently suffering the same problems. But what do I know about America’s taste?

Human Tetris
Ever since YouTube has been invented, people added videos we’ve never seen before, ever, for free. Dailymotion is one of those no-strings-attached video sites, and just now, I found this awesome video.

I really want to have a live game with these guys in front of me. I just dunno if they could really do realtime blinking when it happens.

Greenpinoy.com Sets the Bar Higher
I’ve been a fan of the Greenpinoy site. I always contribute comments and counter-jokes whenever I feel like contributing. I even dreamt of having my own site just like GP’s, but tonight, I saw something that I can never do. Greenpinoy.com has set the bar higher by imitating one of the most-loved cartoon character.

YouTube debut of Whiney the Pot! (Hehe, just giving my own name for the GP’s imitation)
One of the comments people thanked GP for having this as a Christmas gift. I saw it as a Halloween costume. Freaky!
Hehe, of course, it’s always nice to have a new site to take off the stress my work is giving me. Kudos, and keep it up!

Shake Your Groove Thang
Just a few minutes ago, an earthquake rocked Manila and Makati (where I’m currently staying). It was a scale 3 earthquake, which was not that threatening to any human life.
Except for a green-minded guy sleeping during the earthquake’s dawn.
What I actually thought was there was just good sex nearby, and knowing I sleep on a bunk bed, I just thought there could be a couple playing “tennis” or an overly shaky guy playing “solitaire” on the top “deck”. I mean, it could’ve killed me if I still stayed on bed with that thought in mind! Nasty!
And I was the only crazy guy yelling downstairs (of course we went down the building… it was SOP) telling my colleagues how the quake woke my slumber up. I also told them that staying on the ground floor was a lot more boring than being on the top floor, where all the running and the going-down-the-winding-staircase took place / started (haha).
Anyway, I just hope this is the last earthquake I would have to deal with for the next 10 or 20 years. I need to sleep!
